Visualization is the key feature of safe and effective surgery. Until the introduction of the operative microscope in the mid 1900s, middle ear surgery was a crude endeavor, and ossicular reconstruction was merely an idea. Once the tympanic cavity could be illuminated and magnified, a new golden era of otologic surgery emerged.
