Evidenced-based review and evaluation of clinical significance: Non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment of insomnia in the elderly

Insomnia in the elderly presents a challenge to practitioners across medical fields. It is defined in the DSM-5 as dissatisfaction with sleep quantity or quality, and one or more of the following symptoms: difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or early-morning awakening with inability to return to sleep, insomnia disorder is chronic (occurs at least three nights per week), persistent (present for at least three months), and associated with daytime dysfunction.1 The prevalence in adults 65 and older is 42%, and is higher in those with poor health.
