Pericardial effusion after pediatric cardiac surgery: A single-center study

Postoperative pericardial effusion (pPE) still remains a frequent complication after congenital heart surgery and it usually leads to an increased morbidity and re-hospitalization rate.1 Congenital heart diseases (CHD) usually require two or more operations over time as the child grows. For this reason, post-surgical adherences are very frequent, and they increase a lot the risk of pPEs. These can affect up to 20% of surgically treated patients, most of which usually occur during the first month after the operation.
