Successful treatment of pediatric FIRES with anakinra

Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is a rare epileptic syndrome seen primarily in childhood characterized by a febrile infection two weeks to 24 hours prior to the onset of status epilepticus1. The exact pathophysiology is unknown. However, studies have shown increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting an autoinflammatory-mediated process2. The prognosis of FIRES can be devastating, with rapidly progressive cerebral atrophy and hippocampal sclerosis, poor cognitive outcomes and even death3,4.
