Stroke Risk Among Elderly Users of Haloperidol and Typical Antipsychotics Versus Atypical Antipsychotics: A Real-World Study From a US Health Insurance Claims Database

Antipsychotics are approved and prescribed to treat various conditions such as schizophrenia, mania, major depressive disorder, agitation, delusional disorder, psychosis, and Tourette's syndrome.1 The haloperidol prescribing information2 in the United States (US) does not warn about the risk of stroke but has a black box warning for an increased risk of death among elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs. Nonetheless, antipsychotics are used for indications such as neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, in the presence or absence of psychosis; such use is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and this off-label use has increased over the past few years.
