The feasibility of bedside transvaginal ultrasonography in non-pregnant women in the emergency department

Pelvic and abdominal pain in female patients is frequently encountered by emergency physicians (EP). Although the history and physical exam are cornerstones of patient evaluation, the bimanual exam has important limitations and may not be useful for certain pathologies even under optimal conditions [1-3], or when performed by the most skilled physicians [4]. Hence, transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic ultrasonography are frequently performed in women with pelvic pain in our Emergency Department (ED).
