18.1 working with patients with limited communication skills and severe problem behaviors: reducing staff and patient safety risks in outpatient medical settings

The objectives of this presentation are to: 1) identify medical, behavioral, and environmental triggers of complex behaviors creating barriers to medical care of children and adolescents with developmental disorders and communication challenges; and 2) identify effective, practical, and feasible modifications that can be made to a general outpatient medical setting to reduce staff and patient injuries during visits.
