18.3 working with patients with limited communication skills and severe problem behaviors: increasing success of medical procedures within a large medical system

This presentation aims to: 1) discuss the barriers to accessing medical treatment in hospital departments for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)/intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) who present with significant behavioral and/or communication challenges; 2) understand the triggers for behavioral escalation in medical settings; and 3) present strategies to increase acceptability and enhance the success of medical procedures through staff training, active parent involvement, and child preparation and intervention.
