21.4 cannabidiol as a potential treatment option for substance use disorders

The development of an addictive disorder is a complex process that involves multiple brain areas. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to have anxiolytic, antipsychotic, antidepressant, and neuroprotective properties. With expanding understanding of the biology of addiction, the biochemistry of CBD offers a relatively safe option to treat some aspects of substance use disorders (SUDs). Through this presentation, we aim to update the audience about current preclinical and clinical research using CBD to treat SUDs, and the proposed biochemical rationale for the utilization of CBD in the treatment of SUDs.
