22.2 delirium in palliative care
Pediatric delirium increasingly is being recognized in palliative care populations with life-limiting illnesses. Data on pediatric delirium's etiologies and risk factors, and its impact on mortality, are lacking. Studies of intensive care unit (ICU) populations often include previously healthy individuals with sudden trauma and infections in addition to patients with complex chronic conditions (CCC) more typical of those receiving palliative care. Specific studies of pediatric patients with CCC inside and outside of ICU settings could better characterize important clinical considerations for best practices and approaches to patients receiving palliative care and the role of child and adolescent psychiatrists in liaising with palliative care clinicians.
