22.4 longer-term cognitive dysfunction after delirium and the intensive care unit

The pediatric literature related to delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU) is beginning to catch up to the adult literature regarding diagnosis and incidence. However, the adult literature has also gone on to demonstrate an association between delirium in the ICU with later cognitive dysfunction. Currently, there is a gap in knowledge regarding the relation between delirium and longer-term cognitive dysfunction in children. This presentation will examine new data from a prospective, longitudinal study evaluating children for delirium while in the ICU and then following them after discharge to assess their ongoing cognitive function.
