In 2016, the CDC published data confirming that youth and adults who are LGBT remain socially marginalized, with high rates of victimization, bullying, and cyberbullying. They suffer from overt discrimination and higher rates of depression, suicide, and high-risk activities. Social marginalization has helped fuel the LGBT community ’s use of the internet for connection and support. Individuals who are LGBT establish meaningful sexual and romantic relationships online, and these may help form protective family relationships as adulthood progresses.
