Kids with autism spectrum disorder in the medical hospital: special challenges for the patient, provider, and hospital system and how to address them

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) rates are increasing and patients with ASD are more likely to have medical comorbidities and admissions. The limited ability of these patients to communicate needs and utilize coping strategies when stressed or in pain may worsen ASD –related behaviors or symptoms. Hospital staff may be unfamiliar with how to care for these patients, particularly how to manage their behaviors and provide effective comfort and support. Staff education, parent and patient involvement, and overall coordinated care using best practices may improve the overall hospital experience.
