The damage caused by the bushfires in Australia in the last few months is unprecedented. Australia ’s major cities—including Sydney and Melbourne—were filled with smoke. More than half a billion animals died and many people died including American firefighters who had come to help. In total, the area burned by bushfires is almost the size of England, an area approximately the size of Vermon t and New Hampshire combined (13 million hectares). In New South Wales, almost 5 million hectares, which covers an area larger than the Netherlands, have been burned.
