59.1 on the stage and behind the curtain: seeing and serving families and young children in a public housing complex in washington, dc

Poverty and homelessness are a crisis nationwide. In Washington, DC's Ward 8, violence, poverty, and trauma are some of the many factors leading to an increased risk of adverse experiences and toxic stress within the public housing system. While access to housing assistance can alleviate mental health risk factors among children, environmental factors, including community violence and poor living conditions, can promote or exacerbate mental health problems among children. Stressors correlated with housing assistance can also affect caregiver-child relationships, creating an unstable foundation for young children.
