Novel early intervention in autism spectrum disorder: basic principles and new research
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social communication deficits and restricted repetitive behaviors. Early intervention is critical for optimal outcomes in ASD. However, parents need guidance in selecting which treatments to try and providers, including child and adolescent psychiatrists, need to be familiar with available interventions. There is growing consensus that treatments that integrate both behavioral learning principles and developmental theory hold particular promise for young children with ASD.
