16.3 revenge filicide: an international perspective

Filicide is the purposeful killing of 1 or more children by a parent, stepparent, or other parental figure and accounts for 2.5% of homicide arrests. Revenge filicide is a poorly understood, rare form of filicide in which a parent murders their child to exact vengeance against the child ’s other parent. Revenge filicide is well-described throughout mythology, history, and religion. However, there is a paucity of scientific literature on revenge filicide, likely due to its rarity and age-old taboo.
