Association of hearing loss with neuropsychiatric symptoms in older adults with cognitive impairment

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) such as depression, agitation, and apathy are associated with dementia, and are highly prevalent in community settings, with estimates ranging from 61-97%.1 –3 Many studies have found that NPS are associated with multiple poor health outcomes in persons with dementia (PWD), including institutionalization, prolonged hospitalizations, higher care burden, morbidity, and mortality.4,5 NPS are also common among individuals with mild cognitive impairment (M CI), with prevalence estimates ranging 35-85%, and have been associated with worse cognitive performance and functional disability.
