Comment on: Insights into the treatment of post-sleeve gastrectomy leak. Analysis of the results of 105 cases on a national register
Despite the widely accepted role of sleeve gastrectomy in the treatment of patients with obesity as a safe procedure, there are a number of commonly reported complications including gastrointestinal leaks which may lead to serious morbidity and mortality. In a study of 28,616 patients published in 2011, the incidence of leak was reported to be 0.7% but increases in revisional procedures.[1] At its core, the underlying cause of GI leak is intraluminal pressure that exceeds the strength of the tissue integrity and staple line.
