The Reliability of Visual Ratings of Velopharyngeal Physiology for Speech.

CONCLUSIONS: Interrater reliability needs to be improved so that the assessment procedure produces more consistent findings among clinicians, thus strengthening our evidence base for this procedure. Interrater additional research is needed to understand how the stimulus affects ratings of VP physiology, to identify stimuli that yield the most useful clinical information, and to understand how training affects the ratings of VP physiology. Authors: Valentín-Bravo FJ, Asensio-Sánchez VM, Guerra-González A, Vallelado-Álvarez AI Abstract "Ankyloblepharon filiforme adnatum" is a congenital anomaly characterized by partial or complete adhesion of upper and lower eyelids. The lid margins remain fused until the end of the fifth month of gestational age. Complete separation usually is completed about the seventh fetal month. Ankyloblepharon may be an isolated manifestation or may be associated with abnormalities in other organs and / or systems. The case is presented on a newborn male with family history of hypohydrotic ...

Conclusions The vomer bone graft has been shown to correct the lateral and inferior disorientation of the alar base and improve the nostril and nasal tip aesthetic measurements. The vomer bone is therefore a sufficient bone source for grafting with high viability and no resorption.

Conclusions Although plastic surgery trainees endorse gradual operative autonomy overall, a majority of final-year trainees do not perceive supervision only independence in the majority of core procedures queried. Faculties perceive higher trainee operative autonomy than trainees for most procedures. Discordant approaches to case logging were identified both among trainees and between trainees and faculties. Standardization may improve both progression and assessment of operative autonomy in plastic surgery training.

Conclusions The studies here suggest that certain pediatric patient populations are at risk for impaired psychosocial functioning as a result of repetitive procedures. However, it is important to differentiate whether the association with poorer psychosocial outcomes is from the number of surgical procedures or whether the number if just a surrogate for increased disease complexity. Standardized psychosocial outcomes measures and future prospective, long-term, randomized clinical trials are also warranted.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) aims to relieve tongue-based airway obstruction in Robin Sequence (RS). We investigated direct laryngoscopy grade (DLG) improvement and difficult airway (DA) resolution following MDO. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analysis. SETTING: Three tertiary care institutions. PATIENTS: Sixty-four infants with RS who underwent a single MDO procedure in their first year of life were identified from January 2010 to January 2019. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was DLG pre- and post-MDO. Secondary outcomes included DA designation, pre- a...

CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Otological and audiological outcomes in both groups were similar. The audiological prognosis was favorable regardless of the cleft palate condition. PMID: 33030069 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA)-approved multidisciplinary team on velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) diagnosis and treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort setting; tertiary children's hospital patients; children with cleft palate repair identified through procedure codes. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Velopharyngeal insufficiency diagnosis was assigned based on surgeon or team assessment. Age at diagnosis and surgery was recorded. Difference in age and rate of VPI diagnosis and surgery was analyzed with t test. Multivariate linear and logis...
