Vertical transmission of viral infections during pregnancy are major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The clinical manifestations vary depending on the viral agent and the gestational age of pregnancy at infection. A viral infection in the first two trimesters of pregnancy can lead to congenital malformation or fetal death (MMWR 2001; Tan and Koren 2006; Ornoy and Ergaz 2017). Viral infection towards the end of the pregnancy can lead to preterm birth or neonatal morbidity and mortality (Brown et al.

We report a child homozygous for a genomic deletion of the entire coding sequence and part of the 3’U TR of the last exon of IFNAR1, who died from HSE at the age of two years. An older cousin died following vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella at 12 months of age, and another 17-year-old cousin homozygous for the same variant has had other viral illnesses. The encoded IFNAR1 protein is exp ressed on the cell surface but is truncated and cannot interact with the tyrosine kinase TYK2. The patient’s fibroblasts and EBV-B cells did not respond to IFN-α2b or IFN-β, in terms of STAT1, STAT2 and S...

Bacterial, viral, or overall infection was associated with increased Parkinson's disease risk.Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis C virus, Malassezia, and pneumoniae infection were positively associated with the risk of Parkinson's disease. However, infection of herpes virus, hepatitis B virus, pertussis, scarlet fever, mumps, chicken pox, influenza virus, measles, and German measles was not. AbstractAimsRecent studies showed that patients with various bacterial, viral, and fungal infections might be at increased risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the risk of PD in patients with each specific infection varied. This meta...

I have been seeing a lot of second disease and fifth disease—it's that time of year. School is back in session, and winter is just around the corner. The rash-numbering system for these diseases is now a historical footnote, but fifth disease is still commonly used by physicians to refer to erythema infectiosum, a parvovirus. I suspect that this system was created as a memory device for similar names and the obscure Latin terms used for these diseases. Erythema infectiosum is also easy to confuse with the many other erythema rashes such as erythema migrans, erythema marginatum, erythema toxicum, and erythema multif...

n P Abstract For a CSF/serum samples pair the specific Q-value is the ratio of antibody concentrations and proportional to the pathogen-specific antibody index. It is usually extracted from optical density (OD) measurements by applying appropriate evaluation methods. Six different methods for Q-value determination, partly using parameter variation, were assessed with respect to accuracy, precision, and the methods parameter consistency. The methods are based on the Four Parameters Logistic (4PL) equation or the α-method; one method is a polygonal line composed of calibration data. We tested on OD data of 51 ...

Conclusions These data indicate that JCV-specific antibodies are produced intrathecally in a minority of patients with MS, and NAT treatment affects the intrathecal humoral immune response against JCV relatively specifically compared with other neurotropic viruses. Further studies are needed to determine whether this effect translates to higher risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy development.

CONCLUSION: Although being a specialized service linked to a university hospital, vaccination coverage and patients ’ awareness rates proved to be below the desirable level. Vaccination and recovery of the immunization history is recommended immediately after the diagnosis of IBD, regardless of the use of biological agents. Those findings support the need of implementing hospital guidelines and constantly verifying its application by the multidisciplinary team in specialized services in IBD.RESUMO CONTEXTO: No tratamento de doen ças inflamatórias intestinais (DII) são usados imunossupressores e a...

nership A literature review was conducted to identify evidence of cases and outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) that have been reported from on board ships and the methods applied on board for prevention and control, worldwide, in 1990 to April 2019. Moreover, evidence from seroprevalence studies for the same diseases were also included. The literature review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. A total of 1795 cases (115 outbreaks, 7 case reports) were identified, the majority were among crew (1466/1795, 81.7%) and were varicella cases (1497, 83....

Discussion Transplantation is not a common problem for primary care physicians but when a child’s disease has progressed to end-stage organ failure, transplantation can be the only treatment available. While the primary care provider usually is not involved in the daily management of patients before, during and after transplantation, they can be involved in many areas. These can include providing appropriate primary and acute care, ordering and obtaining necessary medical tests, medications and equipment, assisting with medical insurance, providing medical history and records to consultants, translating medical infor...

Conclusions Apart West Nile virus (78), thousands of congenital microcephaly cases, fetal brain tissue damage and neurological syndromes have been associated with ZIKV infection. Unfortunately, the epidemics of this mosquito born, and a relative stable virus is on a rise. Although congenital microcephaly is a rare disorder however, due to lack of standardized diagnostic test facilities, the incidence in the geographically widespread ZIKV epidemic regions is higher. Animals studies showed that ZIKV is a neurotropic virus. It directly targets the developing embryonic brain cells by inducing apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest, and...
