Computerized adaptive technology for the assessment of HRQOL of PD and CKD patients.

This study was designed as a pilot study to see whether electronic patient-reported outcome measures using computer adaptive technology (CAT) could be successfully implemented in clinics caring for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using CAT on an iPad to assess the symptom burden and health-related quality of life of both PD and CKD patients. CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of CCBs over other antihypertensives on predialysis blood pressure levels and intradialytic hypotension among people with CKD who required haemodialysis were uncertain. Effects of CCBs on other side effects and cardiovascular death also remain uncertain. Dihydropyridine CCBs may decrease predialysis systolic and diastolic blood pressure level compared to placebo or no treatment. No studies were identified in children or peritoneal dialysis. Available studies have not been designed to measure the effects on costs. The shortcomings of the studies were that they recruited very few participants, had f...

This study is designed to investigate the relationship between left ventricular mass and thyroid hormone abnormalities and evaluate this relationship after adjustment of inflammatory factors and nutritional status in peritoneal dialysis patients. METHODS: A total of 71 patients undergoing maintenance peritoneal dialysis were included. Serum concentration of total and free triiodothyronine (fT3), total and free thyroxine (fT4), and TSH were measured. LV mass index and the structural properties of heart including LVEDD, LVESD, PWD, and EF were assessed by transthoracic echocardiography. The Surrogates of Inflammation, in...

Here, we report the epidemiological characteristics of childhood CKD in Iran.   Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during 1991 - 2009.  The data were collected using the information in the Iranian Pediatric Registry of Chronic Kidney Disease (IPRCKD) core dataset. RESULTS: A total of ...

We present the recommendations of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology regarding the treatment of pediatric patients with kidney diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Articles and documents from medical societies and government agencies on specific recommendations for children on RRT in relation to COVID-19 as well as those focused on epidemiological aspects of this condition in Brazil Were evaluated and analyzed. RESULTS: We present recommendations on outpatient care, transportation to dialysis centers, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis, and kidney transplantation in children and adolescents during the CO...

In conclusion, we could not confirm the phenomenon of earlier senescence of T-cells in children with CKD on PD treatment. This still requires further investigation. The higher percentage of T-cells with CCR7 surface receptor could be responsible for the increase of proliferation activity in this group of children. We describe a case of a 70-year-old woman on PD presented with moderate abdominal pain and low blood pressure, which contributed to the early diagnosis of PD-related peritonitis complicated with NOMI. Increased white cell count of 7150/ μL (neutrophil, 84%) in dialysate effluent was diagnostic of PD-related peritonitis, which was later found to be caused byPseudomonas putida. Computed tomography with contrast performed after administering crystalloids revealed hepatic portal venous gas, pneumatosis intestinalis in the ascending colon, and normal enhancement of the bowel wall and mesenteric arteries, which suggested a re...

Santosh Varughese, Sanjay K Agarwal, T Ravi Raju, Tripti KhannaIndian Journal of Nephrology 2020 30(4):261-263 Patients with advanced Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown origin (CKDu) need to plan for renal replacement therapy. The patients usually affected are probably best served with living-related renal transplantation. Potential donors from the same area are possibly at risk for developing CKDu and need close monitoring post kidney donation. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is probably a better option as hemodialysis (HD) centers are located in urban areas only and patients have the convenience of receiving therapy at home. Th...
