Combined Phacoemulsification With Goniosynechialysis Under Ophthalmic Endoscope for Primary Angle-closure Glaucoma After Failed Trabeculectomy

Precis: Phacoemulsification with goniosynechialysis under an ophthalmic endoscope (Phaco-OE-GSL) is safe and able to lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) for failed trabeculectomy in primary angle-closure glaucoma with cataract. The larger pupil diameter and younger age are identified as the 2 risk factors for surgical outcome. Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of combined Phaco-OE-GSL for primary angle-closure glaucoma with cataract after failed trabeculectomy. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients (25 eyes) were enrolled in this retrospective study. IOP, best-corrected visual acuity, and number of glaucoma medications at baseline and each postoperative follow-up visit were recorded. Peripheral anterior synechia (PAS) was recorded using gonioscopy. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of surgical failure. Results: The mean follow-up duration was 17.9±11.4 months. The mean IOP was significantly lower than the preoperative baseline IOP at all time points (P

We report our experience with IOL placement in cataract surgery in the setting of paediatric uveitis. METHODS: This non-comparative, retrospective interventional case series examined our cases of paediatric cataract occurring in patients with uveitis from 2003 to 2016. Parameters examined included visual acuity (VA), underlying diagnosis, immunosuppression status, intra-operative complications and requirement for further surgery. RESULTS: In total, 10 eyes of seven patients were identified. The mean age at diagnosis of uveitis was 7.7 years (range 5.2-14 years) with onset of cataract at a mean of 29...

Circular RNAs are characterized as a class of covalently closed circular RNA transcripts and are associated with a variety of cellular processes and neurological diseases by sponging microRNAs. Expression profiling of circular RNAs in glaucoma, which is a form of optic neuropathy, has not been performed to date. The most common characteristic of all forms of glaucoma is the loss of retinal ganglion cells. While the pathogenesis of glaucoma is not fully understood, intraocular pressure is unquestionably the only proven modifiable factor which makes chronic ocular hypertension (COH) animals the classical glaucoma models. Bas...

Authors: Vergot K, Pockar S, Umek L, Vidovic Valentincic N Abstract Purpose: To report on patients who needed hospitalization due to acute anterior uveitis (AAU) and within this group to compare clinical features and outcomes of treatment of HLA-B27+ and HLA-B27- AAU in the population of Slovenian patients. Methods: Retrospective study of hospitalized patients with AAU in the last 39 months at the Eye Hospital in Ljubljana. The data of AAU patients were retroactively studied and compared on the basis of HLA-B27 antigen presence: visual acuity upon admission, visual outcome, the presence of hypopyon, fibrinous r...

Precis: Both nonpenetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS) and iStent inject are safe and effective when combined with phacoemulsification. The NPDS group presented lower final intraocular pressure (IOP); however, more postoperative intervention and longer recovery time was required. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the 1-year efficacy and safety of second-generation trabecular microbypass stent implantation (iStent inject) versus NPDS in association with phacoemulsification (Phaco) for the concomitant surgical treatment of open-angle glaucoma and cataracts. Materials and Methods: This was a single-center longitud...

Conclusions: A conservative approach with acetazolamide treatment or just observation was used in our case series in choroidal detachment without substantial visual loss if, over time, slow improvement was documented. However, further studies are needed to verify the effectiveness of the reported therapy.

ze WA Abstract The successful outcome of treatment for infant and childhood cataract depends on many factors. It is crucial that the treatment falls into a phase in which neither the eye nor the visual pathway and visual cortex are fully developed. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge and provides an overview of the epidemiology, causes and clinical forms, early detection and, above all, treatment options. Special attention is paid to time-critical stages of development, according to which the therapeutic concepts are based. Complications, such as amblyopia and glaucoma are discussed in detai...
