Perioperative Infusions of Intravenous Lidocaine Compared with Intraperitoneal Lidocaine in Laparoscopic Colon Operations: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Controlling postoperative pain is essential to improving experience of operations and outcomes. Traditionally opioids have been used for postoperative analgesia and although they are effective at controlling pain, they are associated with many unwanted side effects, including postoperative ileus and long-term opioid addiction. Two techniques that have shown promise at reducing pain and opioid consumption are intraperitoneal (IPL) and intravenous infusions of lidocaine (IVL). The aim of this study was to compare, for the first time, IPL with IVL for laparoscopic colon resections.
