Important correlates of purpose in life identified through a machine learning approach

Purpose in life (PiL) is a trait-like tendency to derive meaning from life experiences and to possess a sense of direction and intentionality in life1. PiL has been shown to be an important building block for psychological resilience and eudaimonic well-being2,3, as well as a protective factor for mental and physical health and for healthy aging. For instance, greater PiL predicts lower incidence of sleep disturbances4, better physical functioning5, lower risk for depression6, lower incidence for stroke7, lower risk for cardiovascular disease8, and greater longevity9.
