CONCLUSION: Symptoms synonymous with sleep apnoea and insomnia might represent modifiable risk factors that provide independent contributions to HRQoL over time in those with IBD. These findings suggest that interventions designed to improve sleep apnoea and insomnia could confer benefits to HRQoL in those with IBD. However, more longitudinal research is needed to understand the contribution of sleep disturbances over the longer term, as well as more randomized controlled trials testing the effect of improving sleep on IBD-related outcomes. This study supports a comprehensive approach to evaluation and treatment of mild OSA. While all people with mild OSA may not need to be treated with CPAP, there are patients who can greatly benefit from it. Treatments may be trial and error until you and your doctor get it right When sleep apnea is mild, treatment recommendations are less clear-cut, and should be determined based on the severity of your symptoms, your preferences, and other co-occurring health problems. Working in conjunction with your doctor, you can try a stepwise approach — if one treatment doesn’t work, you can stop that and try an alternat...

Conclusions The weak associations of sleep quality with sleep disorders and objectively measured sleep disturbances are consistent with concepts of “sleep health” as a multidimensional construct. Sleep quality is a patient-centered outcome that provides unique information over objective measurements of sleep disturbances.

Abstract A good night's sleep is a prerequisite for sustainable mental and physical health. Sleep disorders, including sleep disordered breathing, insomnia and sleep related motor dysfunction (e.g., restless legs syndrome), are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially in more severe disease. COPD is commonly associated with multimorbidity, and sleep disorders as a component of this multimorbidity spectrum have a further negative impact on COPD-related comorbidities. Indeed, concomitant diseases in COPD and in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are similar, suggesting that the com...

Authors: Shah A, Ayas N, Tan WC, Malhotra A, Kimoff J, Kaminska M, Aaron SD, Jen R Abstract Small studies have suggested that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have poor sleep quality. Our aim was to examine the prevalence of subjective sleep-related complaints and predictors of poor sleep quality in a large community-based COPD cohort. We analyzed cross-sectional data on sleep questionnaire responses from the Canadian Cohort of Obstructive Lung Disease (CanCOLD) study, a population-based, prospective longitudinal cohort study across Canada. The cohort comprises a COPD group and two matched...

n Restless legs syndrome is a relatively common neurologic disorder considerably more prevalent in women than in men. It is characterized by an inactivity-induced, mostly nocturnal, uncomfortable sensation in the legs and an urge to move them to make the disagreeable sensation disappear. Some known genes contribute to this disorder and the same genes contribute to an overlapping condition—periodic leg movements that occur during sleep and result in insomnia. Dopamine and glutamate transmission in the central nervous system are involved in the pathophysiology, and an iron deficiency has been shown in region-sp...

CONCLUSIONS: We found that the frequency of RLS in the present patients with PD was higher than that in our previous study of a general population of RLS subjects. Compared to the PD patients without RLS, the present PD patients with RLS suffered from worse sleep quality and QoL, depression, anxiety, and autonomic disturbances, especially those with cardiovascular problems. Abstract Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sleep disorder that may exacerbate many of the symptoms and consequences of multiple sclerosis (MS), and may have further implications for health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The present study examined the relationships among RLS, symptoms and HRQOL in people with MS. Participants with MS (n = 275) completed the Cambridge-Hopkins Restless Legs Syndrome Questionnaire, the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group Scale, the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Fatigue Severity Scale, the Hospital Anxiety and Depressi...

Abstract Exercise improves objective measures of physical function in individuals on hemodialysis, but its effect on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is largely unknown. We performed a scoping review to characterize the existing knowledge base on exercise and PROs in dialysis patients to make recommendations for future research. We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CINAHL, and SPORT Discus from inception to November 28, 2018 and then screened results for randomized controlled trials comparing aerobic/resistance exercise, or both, with...

Conclusion: Poor sleepers constituted approximately half of our patients with PD. The participants experienced more favorable sleep if they were currently working. Increased PD duration, severity, depression or anxiety symptoms, and doses of dopaminergic therapy were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Continued working, attempts to treat comorbid anxiety or depression, and avoidance of overdosage of dopaminergic treatments may improve sleep quality in patients with PD. Introduction Non-motor symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD) have gained increasing research attention in recent years because they have a...
