One size does not fit all: mental health services access for people with intellectual/learning disability requires individualised planning and education/training programmes for health and social care providers

Research describes individuals with a learning/intellectual disability as more prone to a range of additional physical and mental health problems than the general population.1 This vulnerable group often has negative experiences while receiving treatment, which can escalate their anxiety and coping mechanisms, leaving them feeling invisible. This can lead to between 25% and 39% of these individuals experiencing mental health problems
