Postoperative radiotherapy with intensity-modulated radiation therapy versus 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy in early breast cancer: A randomized clinical trial of KROG 15-03

The role of radiation therapy in early breast cancer has emerged after two randomized trials that reported there was no significant difference in survival between total mastectomy and breast conserving surgery plus radiation therapy [1,2]. There was a significant decrease of the local recurrence rate in the ipsilateral breast after lumpectomy plus breast irradiation, as compared to lumpectomy alone [1]. In a prospective study in Europe (EORTC 22881-10882), postoperative whole breast irradiation with tumor bed boost significantly improved the 10-year local recurrence rate compared to whole breast irradiation alone in early breast cancer [3].
