Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong disorder caused by an autoimmune reaction and the consequent destruction of pancreatic beta cells, leading to an absolute insulin deficiency in the body. To date, the only therapeutic option is insulin therapy, which is administered either as an MDI (multiple daily injection) or by means of an insulin pump [1].
