In this Viewpoint JAMA Surgery ’s editor reviews how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the practice of general surgery in its first 6 months, including the need for universal precautions to mitigate the risks of infection transmission, the cessation and resumption of elective procedures, and adverse effects on educational expe riences of students aspiring to the specialty.
