Keratoconus: a potential risk factor for osteoarthritis
This study was undertaken to compare the distal femoral cartilage thickness in patients with keratoconus (KC) with that of age- and sex-matched healthy controls, in order to identify a potential risk factor for early osteoarthritis in patients with KC and to allow initiation of early rehabilitation.MethodsThirty-six KC patients between 18 and 35 years of age and 36 healthy controls were included in this study. Keratometry readings (K1,K2), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), iridocorneal angle (ICA), and corneal volumes (CV) were measured using a Sirius imaging system (Costruzioni Strumenti Oftalmici, Italy). Also, the distal femoral cartilage thickness (DFCT) was assessed bilaterally using ultrasound by the same physiatrist. Lateral femoral condyle (LFC), intercondylar area (ICA), medial femoral condyle (MFC), and body mass index (BMI) values were recorded.ResultsPatient and control groups were comparable in terms of age, gender, and BMI. On the other hand, patients with KC had a significant reduction in right LFC, MFC thickness and left ICA, MFC as compared to controls (p
Conclusion: By underlining the gaps of knowledge and attitude towards breastfeeding of nurses working in NICUs, this study provides an insight into what needs to be improved, with the aim of promoting higher rates of breastfeeding in the preterm population. What is Known:•Breastfeeding is particularly challenging in the preterm population, despite its universally recognized health benefits.•Improving healthcare professionals ’ knowledge and attitude towards breastfeeding has been shown to be crucial for promoting breastfeeding in NICUs.What is New:•Our results provide useful insight into nurses ’ ...
Conclusion: Ambulatory renal and cardio-vascular follow-up in case of neonatal medical history can be enhanced, with necessity to raise awareness and to edict guidelines available to pediatricians. What is Known:•There is a compelling evidence of long-term renal and cardiovascular consequences of prematurity and low birth weight.•Specific cardiovascular and renal follow-up guidelines, coming from professional organizations, are currently not available for these patients. What is New:•Pediatricians in ambulatory setting do not adapt their renal and cardiovascular follow-up in case of neonatal medical history.&b...
CONCLUSION: The ultrasonography measure of right liver lobe diameter by itself can reliably identify patients with NAFLD with a good sensitivity and specificity, however, this can be improved by adding the LAP mathematical index in our population. PMID: 33031969 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: It appears that the knee OA pain and disability can be decreased after a dual-frequency LLLT applied to acupoints (SP9, SP10, and EX-LE2). The clinical efficacy of LLLT is highly related to the therapeutic settings of the laser apparatus; hence, more clinical trials with diffident parameter settings are needed to be further clarified. This study was designed to examine the effect of TEAS for pain relief in women undergoing transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte aspiration. This single-blinded, multicenter, randomized controlled trial was performed in China between May 2013 and May 2015. The subjects were randomized to mock TEAS and TEAS. TEAS or mock TEAS was administered 30 min before oocyte retrieval until the end of the operation. The primary and secondary endpoints were the pain measured using the visual analog scale (VAS) within 1 min and 1 hour after oocyte retrieval, respectively. Serum β-endorphin levels were tested in the firs...

CONCLUSION: According to our subclinical electrophysiological findings, surgeons that use the posterolateral approach in THA procedures must be conscious of the sciatic nerve's vulnerability to reduce possible clinical complications. PMID: 33031693 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
CONCLUSIONS: This study on dry eye confirmed but also refuted many risk factors from smaller epidemiological studies, and discovered numerous new risk factors in multiple etiological categories. The finding that dry eye symptoms are particularly common in young adults is concerning, and warrants further study. PMID: 32376389 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
