Barriers to Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Adults in the United States: A Systematic Review with a Focus on Age

In 2018, it was estimated that around 9,000 patients received allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and 14,000 patients received autologous HCTs in the US.1 These numbers are expected to gradually increase at the rate of approximately 5% each year due to advances in HCT strategies, increased donor availability, improved pre- and post-transplantation care, and improvement in transplantation outcomes.2, 3 In response, the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy and the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match Registry have developed and sponsored a System Capacity Initiative (SCI).
