Identification of a heat shock protein 90 inhibitor with antiviral activity against in vitro Chikungunya virus infection

Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an enveloped positive-sense RNA virus that belongs to the genus Alphavirus (family Togaviridae). CHIKV is a re-emerging mosquito-borne pathogen that causes high fever, skin rashes and musculoskeletal inflammatory disease with severe joint and muscle pain. The global emergence of CHIKV has caused significant socio-economic burden in affected areas, but there is still no licensed vaccines or antiviral therapies available.
