To Every Nerve There Is a Needle —The Threat of a Pygmalion Effect

The outcome of pediatric cardiac surgery has improved progressively over the past several decades, in which the risk of mortality has decreased significantly for even the most complex of congenital heart defects.1 Along with the improved survival, the impetus and focus have shifted to limiting morbidities and enhancing recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS).2 Similar to the adult drive for ERACS, one of the most important and effective tools is postoperative multimodal pain control, with its potential impact on early extubation, early mobilization, and shorter length of stay.
