Trauma contributes significantly to the burden of disease and mortality throughout the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) [1]. Globally, injuries cause over five million deaths annually; this is 32% more than deaths due to HIV, tuberculosis and malaria combined [2]. Ninety percent of injury-related deaths occur in LMICs, where there are inadequate resources to provide the appropriate care to optimise patient outcomes [3].
