Patient Engagement in Research: Using Qualitative Methods to Gather Patient and Caregiver Perspectives

Patient engagement in research (PER) has recently emerged as a new important undertaking in health services research. PER encourages meaningful collaboration between researchers and patients at all stages of research activity and can take place at any level, from that of program design to individual projects. Our institution has made a commitment to increase the meaningful engagement of patients and caregivers in the development, implementation and dissemination of research. Gathering the perspectives of these stakeholders on the meaning, value and implementation of PER is a critical step in the development of strategies to support the integration PER into our existing research culture.
