A Novel Radiation Therapist Led Implied Consent Process for Low-Risk Research
To enable evidence-based practices in radiation therapy there is a need to increase the proportion of patients enrolled on prospective research studies. In the current ‘Big Data’ era there has been a call for all patients to provide up-front informed consent to use their routine clinical care data for research. However, this can be logistically challenging, resource-intensive and costly. Traditional consent processes, while appropriate and necessary for high-r isk interventional studies, may not be needed for radiotherapy studies posing a very low risk to patients.
