Ectopic pregnancy: why do embryos get lost along the way?

Serious morbidity and mortality, thankfully, remain rare with the use of assisted reproductive technologies (1). However, when complications do arise following fertility treatments, ectopic pregnancy is rivaled perhaps only by ovarian hyperstimulation in terms of provoking anxiety in both patient and provider alike. The potential for severity is great. Rupture, if not found in a timely fashion, can have grave consequences, potentially necessitating emergency laparotomy or even resulting in death.
