UNISON welcomes police chiefs ’ report on safety

UNISON has welcomed the publication of the Report and Recommendations on Officer and Staff Safety from the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC). The report, which was released today, recommends important new measures to protect police staff – who include UNISON members – at work. These include: for the first time, the central collection of data on all assaults on, and deaths in service of police staff in England and Wales; a requirement for each force to review the personal protective equipment (PPE) of police community support officers, which comes after two thirds of PCSOs said that their PPE was inadequate, with 61% asking to be issued with irritant spray to help keep them safe; each force to review the issue of body armour to key frontline police staff roles, together with better protection for custody and detention officers by making arrest the default outcome for anyone who assaults a custody and detention officer. UNISON national officer for police staff, Ben Priestley, said: “The recommendations in the NPCC report are far reaching and significant.
