Health Services Research for Interventional Radiology Procedures in Large Databases —Implications for the Practicing Radiologist

In 2015, a Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation task force critically evaluated the state of research in interventional radiology (IR) [1] and found the state of IR scientific publications as predominantly focused on small-scale research projects related to a culture of innovation and “tinkering.” The evidence base was comprised mostly of single-center retrospective reviews. This assessment mirrored an analysis of the surgical literature that found that most highly cited surgical publications of the 1980s were simple descriptive analyses of a single institution’s experience [2].
