Barriers and Facilitators of Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease

Honoring patients ’ care preferences surrounding quality of life drives high-quality medical care.1 This is especially important for patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) who live with chronic illness. Life expectancy has markedly increased with medical and surgical advancements, but many continue to face disability, multimorbidity, and early death.2 Palliative care improves patients’ quality of life through the early identification, assessment, and treatment of pain and other problems that cause suffering.
