Fit for purpose? Footwear for patients with and without diabetic peripheral neuropathy: A cross-sectional study

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a physiological disorder provoked by endogenous insulin deficiency and impaired insulin efficiency, or both. It is characterised by hyperglycaemia and is associated with chronic complications that can affect nearly all organs in the body [1]. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 425 million people worldwide, or 8.8% of adults aged 20 –79 years, had DM in 2017, four times more than in 1980. This figure is expected to increase to 642 million by 2040 [2].
