Characterizing nocturia among Belgian healthy postmenopausal women: prevalence, bother, etiology and possible risk factors for developing nocturia

Nocturia, or the act of passing urine during the main sleeping period, is a common symptom in the elderly population [1]. Today, little is known about nocturia in early postmenopausal women. However, due to the lack of endogenous produced estrogen in these women, an increased prevalence of nocturia is expected. A Thai cohort study reported nocturia as the most prevalent genito-urethral symptom affecting 77.7% of all postmenopausal women. Despite this high prevalence, only a quarter of all affected women sought medical attention [2].
