Typical values for pediatric interventional cardiology catheterizations: A standardized approach towards Diagnostic Reference Level establishment
The recent increase in the number of Interventional Cardiology (IC) procedures performed in children has raised interest in the monitoring of radiation dose related to fluoroscopy-guided procedures [1 –7]. Quantifying the magnitude of radiation exposure is crucial given the evidence of correlation between dose and the lifetime risk of cancer, especially for children [8–14]. Indeed, children exposed to ionizing radiation are more likely to experience stochastic effects than adults [15–17]. T herefore, exposure must be monitored and optimized in order to keep it as low as reasonably achievable without compromising diagnostic information and preserving image quality [18–20].
