Experimental benchmarking of RayStation proton dose calculation algorithms inside and outside the target region in heterogeneous phantom geometries

Dose calculation accuracy in the context of high precision radiotherapy, irrespective of beam quality, is one of the long-standing topics in medical physics research [1,2]. While pencil beam algorithms have become obsolete in high energy photon beam therapy for more than a decade, these algorithms are still widely used in particle beam therapy. Moreover, current clinical knowledge and experience is based on treatment planning with pencil beam algorithms [3]. Monte Carlo simulations serve as the gold standard in dose calculation since several decades.
