Dermatology ’s Management of Flagship Diseases in Older Adults

This is an ideal time to discuss the vulnerabilities of our older generations. The COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated how disease can have unique and detrimental effects on older adults, including atypical presentation, rapid disease progression, and higher mortality rates. This vulnerability has always existed, but this crisis has highlighted to the medical community and the general population that meeting the needs of this group requires unique effort, approach, and understanding. Dermatology has struggled to capture these unique vulnerabilities in education and research of even our most common diseases. This creates the daily scenario in which dermatologists care for older adults without deliberate education or evidence-based guidance.
