Concealed role of red blood cells in pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension: Decreased red blood cell nitric oxide generation and effect of Rho-Kinase inhibitor fasudil.

CONCLUSIONS: This study provides first evidences for decreased RBC eNOS activity due to its ROCK mediated negative regulation under PAH conditions. Considering increased ROCK activity contributes to progression of PAH, ROCK inhibition influences NO bioavailability through RBC eNOS, in addition to endothelial eNOS.
