CONCLUSION: OUD-hospitalizations increased in all 5 musculoskeletal diseases studied, but the rate of increase differed. Awareness of these OUD-hospitalization trends in 5 musculoskeletal diseases among providers, policy-makers and patients is important. Development and implementation of interventions, policies and practices to potentially reduce OUD-associated impact in people with rheumatic diseases is needed. AbstractThere is a high percentage of error in the approach of patients with joint pain by primary care physicians. An algorithm can help improve this misdiagnosis problem. Our study seeks to determine the effectiveness of an algorithm when used by primary care physicians for the diagnosis of cases of joint pain patients. A randomized clinical experiment was carried out. Primary care physicians from five cities in Colombia developed a series of clinical cases, which were presented to them through a website on their personal cell phones. Half of the doctors developed the cases using the diagnostic algorithm, and the other h...

We examined 16 review articles and 11 randomized controlled trials published in the last 5  years on the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in adults with CMP conditions. The available evidence suggests that acupuncture does have short-term pain relief benefits for patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis and chronic low back pain and is a safe and reasonable referral option. Acupunct ure may also have a beneficial role for fibromyalgia. However, the available evidence does not support the use of acupuncture for treating hip osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.SummaryThe majority of studies concluded the superi...

We report that electrical stimulation (ES) stimulation of post-stroke aged rats led to an improved functional recovery of spatial long-term memory (T-maze), but not on the rotating pole or the inclined plane, both tests requiring complex sensorimotor skills. Surprisingly, ES had a detrimental effect on the asymmetric sensorimotor deficit. Histologically, there was a robust increase in the number of doublecortin-positive cells in the dentate gyrus and SVZ of the infarcted hemisphere and the presence of a considerable number of neurons expressing tubulin beta III in the infarcted area. Among the genes that were unique...

Conclusion Roughly one-third (33%) of the patients undergoing total wrist fusion experience a postoperative complication and 19% of the patients underwent a reoperation. Total wrist fusion of the dominant hand results in higher reoperation rates. The risk of a soft tissue complication after total wrist fusion is increased in smokers. This study confirms that stimulation with tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) results in expression of proinflammatory genes in mouse and human FLS (derived from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients), as well as increased secretion of cytokines from mouse TNF-α-stimulated FLS (TNF-FLS). Electrophysiological recordings from retrograde labelled knee neurons cocultured with TNF-FLS, or supernatant derived from TNF-FLS, revealed a depolarized resting membrane potential, increased spontaneous action potential firing, and enhanced TRPV1 function, all consistent with a role for FLS in mediating the sensitization...

AbstractBackground Arthritis is a common chronic joint disease. It progressively causes joint pain, stiffness, and disability. Glucosamine sulfate has been shown to be an effective symptom-relieving biological agent. Pharmaceutical care, including patient counseling, is very important to overcome inconsistencies in compliance and adherence. Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical care on the efficacy and safety of transdermal glucosamine sulfate and capsaicin (TGC-Plus cream) in the management of chronic joint pain.Settings A rheumatology outpatient clinic, Jordan University Hospital, Amm...

Authors: Alahdal M, Duan L, Ouyang H, Wang D Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative joint disease and a leading cause of disability. It involves articular cartilage destruction and a whole joint inflammation. In spite of OA pathogenesis is still unclear, new studies on the OA pathophysiological aetiology and immunomodulation therapy continuously achieve significant advances with new concepts. Here, we focus on the indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase1 (IDO1) activity in the osteoarthritis (OA), which is one of the noticeable enzymes in the synovial fluid of arthritis patients. It was recognized as an essenti...
