Chronic Exposure to Low-Dose Carbon Monoxide Alters Hemoglobin Mass and V˙O2max

This study aimed to determine the effect of chronic low-dose CO application on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and V˙O2max. Methods For 3 wk, 11 healthy and moderately trained male subjects inhaled a CO bolus five times per day to increase their HbCO concentration by ~5%. Another 11 subjects received a placebo. Hbmass, serum erythropoietin concentration, ferritin, and basic hematological parameters were determined before and weekly during and until 3 wk after the CO inhalation period. V˙O2max tests on a cycle ergometer were performed before and after the CO administration period. Results In the CO group, Hbmass increased from 919 ± 69 to 962 ± 78 g in week 3 (P

We report a novel glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variant (c.1375C#x3e;G) discovered in a 3-day-old Hispanic male child from Salt Lake City, UT, USA. This newborn presented with severe hyperbilirubinemia (29.8 mg/dL or 510 μmol/L) and marked hemolysis evidenced by elevated end-tidal carbon monoxide concentration (5.9 ppm, normal #x3c;1.7 ppm). Despite a very low prevalence of G6PD deficiency in Hispanic populations, we pursued testing for this condition and found he had low erythrocyte G6PD enzyme activity (2.8 U/g H b, normal 9.9–16.6 U/g Hb) and a novelG6PD variant. His mother was heterozygous for this ...

Abstract The development of molecular catalysts for CO2 electroreduction within electrolyzers requests their immobilization on the electrodes. While a variety of methods have been explored for the heterogenization of homogeneous complexes, we here report a novel approach using a hierarchical porous carbon material, derived from a Metal Organic Framework, as a support for the well-known molecular catalyst [Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). This cathodic hybrid material, named Re@HPC, has been tested for CO2 electroreduction using a mixture of an ionic liquid (1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, EM...

Authors: Carbone RG, Paredi P, Monselise A, Bottino G, Puppo F Abstract OBJECTIVE: Mortality risk factors as forced vital capacity, diffuse lung capacity for carbon monoxide, and 6-minutes' walk test were studied in clinical trials monitoring patients affected by interstitial lung diseases (ILD). However, these parameters showed scarce accuracy. Our aim was to identify New York Heart Association (NHYA) class, in association with high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (Octreoscan), as a prognostic mortality risk factor in ILD patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Study popula...

Since its discovery 16 years ago, roaming has become a ubiquitous mechanism in molecular photochemistry. Its general features are now understood, but little detail is known about how the potential energy surface (PES) determines reaction outcomes. We performed detailed experiments on formaldehyde (H2CO) photodissociation and determined fully correlated quantum state distributions of the molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide products. These experiments reveal previously undetected bimodal carbon monoxide rotational distributions. Insights from classical trajectory calculations demonstrate that these features arise from res...

We reported the clinical, functional, radiologic and hemodynamic characteristics at diagnosis and outcomes of patients with PVOD from the French PH Registry after exposure to MMC. The results are expressed as the median (minimum-maximum). RESULTS: From June 2011 to December 2018, 17 incident cases of MMC-induced PVOD were identified. At diagnosis, these patients had severe clinical and functional impairment, with12 patients having a New York Heart Association Functional Class (NYHA FC) of III or IV and a 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) of 220 (0-465) meters. Right heart catheterization confirmed severe precapillary PH w...
