Chronic Exposure to Low-Dose Carbon Monoxide Alters Hemoglobin Mass and V˙O2max

This study aimed to determine the effect of chronic low-dose CO application on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and V˙O2max. Methods For 3 wk, 11 healthy and moderately trained male subjects inhaled a CO bolus five times per day to increase their HbCO concentration by ~5%. Another 11 subjects received a placebo. Hbmass, serum erythropoietin concentration, ferritin, and basic hematological parameters were determined before and weekly during and until 3 wk after the CO inhalation period. We report a novel glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) variant (c.1375C#x3e;G) discovered in a 3-day-old Hispanic male child from Salt Lake City, UT, USA. This newborn presented with severe hyperbilirubinemia (29.8 mg/dL or 510 μmol/L) and marked hemolysis evidenced by elevated end-tidal carbon monoxide concentration (5.9 ppm, normal #x3c;1.7 ppm). We reported the clinical, functional, radiologic and hemodynamic characteristics at diagnosis and outcomes of patients with PVOD from the French PH Registry after exposure to MMC.
