Reconstruction for large-scale temporomandibular joint (TMJ) defects can be challenging. We have used the medial femoral condyle (MFC) osseocartilaginous flap for repair of TMJ defects. The aim of this paper was to describe our technique and to present the preliminary results. The MFC osseocartilaginous flap was used as a free vascularized graft for TMJ defect in four patients who had undergone resection for benign tumor of the TMJ region (n = 2) or TMJ ankylosis (n=2). A computer-assisted technique was used in all cases.
A variety of techniques have been described in the literature for the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis. However, one of the factors most commonly related to the failure of maintenance mouth opening in the postoperative period is the inadequate excision of the ankylotic mass. Furthermore, the surrounding noble structures, such as the base of the skull, internal maxillary artery and dental germs, are at risk of being affected during the procedure. For this reason, prototyped guides have been proposed to steer osteotomies and resections of the ankylotic block in the TMJ.
Both temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and sleep bruxism (SB) are known to be destructive to the masticatory system. However, the association between the 2 conditions is poorly understood. The aim of our study was to assess the relationship between TMD and SB through the signs and symptoms in 2 patient groups: TMD only and TMD with SB.
Conclusion: Female patients had a higher prevalence and severity of TMJ-OA than male patients. The prevalence and severity of TMJ-OA increased with age, with peaks in the fifth and seventh decades of life. PMID: 33005582 [PubMed]
Conclusion: TMD patients suffer with continuous pain for long time even after conventional treatment. Laser therapy shows a promising outcome of pain reduction for TMD patients.
